The National Museum of Korea’s dress-up Contest

Reading Time Icon2 min read

The National Museum of Korea is number three on the list of the world’s most popular museums. The question is what causes this high ranking. There are many fascinating artifacts on display in the National Museum of Korea. The museum offers visitors a chance to explore Korea’s history and culture through its expansive collection. But that does not explain its huge popularity.

The secret of its success probably is that it has found creative ways to promote itself and attract new audiences. To this end, it has collaborated with HYBE entertainment, the company behind BTS, and has appointed BTS member RM as its Global Public Relations Ambassador. Consequently, in 2024 the museum introduced a dress-up contest to celebrate every artifact in its collection. The rules are simple: participants can dress up as any atifact on display in the museum and use their costumes to tell its story, bringing history to life. Since 2024, the contest has grown in size each year.

This year’s contest was competitive, with participants showing a wide range of creative costumes, from slippers to traditional tiled roofs. The event attracted significant attention, drawing 643 participants and 2,000 visitors who came to enjoy the event. The first prize was won by Jeon Eun-seul, a 23-year-old university student, for his costume inspired by the ‘White Porcelain Carp-shaped Water Dropper’.

The dress-up contest shows how the National Museum of Korea stimulates engagement through creative events. Its growing popularity should convince other museums to bring culture and history to life while connecting with younger audiences.
